Project gives pupils good foundations
Schoolchildren are taking part in a pilot project
with a York business to encourage the learning of science,
technology, engineering and maths.
CITB-ConstructionSkills and David Wilson Homes will help pupils from Huntington School understand how the subjects are used in industry, particularly in relation to sustainable construction, and the future career opportunities that they offer.
The pilot was launched with a visit to David Wilson Homes' Derwenthorpe site to give students the chance to meet apprentices, learn about the everyday workings of a construction site and gain an insight to the industry's skills needs.
Maria O'Sullivan, strategic partnership adviser in Yorkshire and the Humber for CITB-ConstructionSkills, said: "Many students don't know how maths and science subjects are used in construction, so it's really a great opportunity to demonstrate this first-hand.
"It's an innovative and exciting way to get young people interested in construction careers and make clear those connections.
"With one in six workers in construction due to retire within ten years, it's vital that we bring new recruits into the sector to secure the long-term growth of the industry."
