Record-Breaking Sales For Phantom Of The Opera

Phantom of the OperaLeeds Grand Theatre is celebrating a record-breaking day of sales after The Phantom of the Opera went on sale last Thursday 9th February and the theatre sold nearly 6000 seats in just 24 hours.

Mervyn Horsfall is the Box Office Manager and has worked at The Grand for 22 years.  "I haven't seen queues like that for a long time," he says. "It used to be that as soon as the new season brochure was mailed we would have queues down the street, but the arrival of online ticket buying changed that.  This on-sale took me right back to those times.  We had to bring people indoors to queue in the theatre foyer as it was so cold outside!"

"Over 65% of thePhantombookings were taken online," says Mervyn. "This is good news for us as we launched our new website and ticketing system at the end of last year; such a big change in a busy venue can be a little hair-raising but I think we've proved that it's working for us!"

The Phantom of the Opera is Broadway's longest running show and it comes to Leeds Grand Theatre for a five week run starting in August. The production has won over 60 major theatre awards, including seven Tonys on Broadway, three Olivier Awards in the West End and the 'Most Popular Musical Audience Award' as voted by the public in the 2002 Laurence Olivier Awards.

"The Phantom of the Opera is a wonderful production and we're delighted to be hosting it in our beautiful auditorium," says Ian Sime, Theatre Manager. "It's incredibly satisfying to know that the people of Leeds and Yorkshire are as excited about The Phantom as we are."

John Owen-Jones, who has played the role of Phantom in the West End, will take it on again for Leeds, and Christine is taken by Katie Hall who was a contestant on BBC1's "I'd Do Anything".

The Phantom of the Opera is at Leeds Grand Theatre from August 9th to September 15th.  Tickets are priced from £19 to £55 and can be booked by calling Box Office on 0844 848 2700 or online at www.leedsgrandtheatre.com.
