Derwenthorpe scoops national housing award

DAVID Wilson Yorkshire East’s most popular development has beaten strong competition from housing projects all over the country to take home a coveted Sunday Times British Homes Award.

Derwenthorpe in Osbaldwick (York) is adding the Affordable Housing Development trophy to its growing list of accolades. Previous wins include a Housing Design Award and a Pride in the Job Quality Award; presented to Site Manager Mark Oates for outstanding build quality.

The first phase of this hugely successful development – 40 per cent of which is affordable housing – is being delivered by David Wilson Homes in partnership with the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT).

Derwenthorpe will eventually offer up to 540 high-quality environmentally-friendly and energy efficient homes which have been expertly designed by Richards Partington Architects to be as innovative as they are practical.

This development is fast proving to be a buyer favourite; with home hunters keen to take advantage of its ‘future-proof’ housing offering, excellent location and stunning surroundings. Buyers have already snapped up 70 per cent of the available homes since April.

The first phase of the scheme consists of 64 homes which deliver the region’s most comprehensive offering of eco-extras including, bio-mass heating facilities and contemporary methods of insulation - which guarantee reduced fuel bills for residents. The properties also benefit from fibre optic broadband, providing residents with unparalleled high-speed internet.

The development’s designs draw on the rich architectural legacy of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s century-old model Arts and Crafts village at nearby New Earswick. Large steeply pitched roofs, painted brickwork and striking dormer windows are combined to create a distinctive sense of scale and place.

Derwenthorpe delivers a series of excellent amenities which, when complete will include: 18 acres of open spaces, including wildflower meadows, play areas, parkland, a pond and trim trails/walkways. Buyers can enjoy a host of everyday facilities right on their doorstep and York city centre is but a short bus ride away.

Current availability includes a selection of two, three and four bedroom homes with prices starting from £214,995. A member of each household will also receive a two year membership for the ‘City Car Club’ scheme and a voucher for either a bus pass or bicycle.

Paul Hogan, Sales Director for David Wilson Yorkshire East commented: “Derwenthorpe has become synonymous with quality, individuality and excellence.

“This award reflects the suitability of these homes to meet the needs of all kinds of buyers and is testament to the hard work that has gone into bringing this pioneering community to fruition after years of careful planning. These homes offer an ‘in reach’ and affordable opportunity to live in one of the country’s most exemplary homes.”

Nigel Ingram, Director of Development and Asset Management at Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust added: “Design quality, affordability, accessibility and energy efficiency have always been central to our ambition for an inclusive Derwenthorpe. With our partners, we have worked hard to provide affordable, high quality homes for a range of families in York so we are delighted that Derwenthorpe has been recognized in this way.”
